Lathrop to Exhibit in National Show of Paintings

Evansville artist William (Bill) Lathrop has been invited into the 2007 Paint the Parks Top 100, a touring exhibit of paintings inspired by the National Parks. Bill's painting, "Miners Beach," portrays the beach along Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The 2007 exhibit opens on August 3rd in Topeka, Kansas and includes stops at Grand Canyon, Arizona and St. George, Utah.

The Paint the Parks exhibit is sponsored by the non-profit organization, Paint America, which was established to support and promote the arts by funding scholarships for young artists while establishing a premier, national showcase for the country's most notable artists. Jurors for this year's event; W. Scott Jennings, LiliAnn Francuz and Ann Trusty; selected their top 100 paintings from a large pool of artists who entered the event.

Bill's painting was inspired by a plein air sketch he did at the west end of Miners Beach at Pictured Rocks, where the Miners River flows into Lake Superior. The painting highlights two iconic white pine trees overlooking the rocky shore and crystal waters of Lake Superior.

Lathrop has served as Artist in Residence with two parks in the National Park System. In the fall of 2005 Bill spent three weeks along the shore of Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 2006 he was invited to Buffalo National River in the heart of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains. Says the artist, "These experiences have been pivotal in the development of my vision as an artist. I now search for subject matter in wild and natural places almost exclusively."

Bill will be the featured artist later this summer at the Door County gallery, Fine Line Designs, in Ephraim. For this show, Lathrop will be exhibiting over 20 paintings created largely within the last 6 months, most inspired by his National Park residencies. The reception for this show is August 11th. He is also represented by Artisan Gallery in Paoli. More information about Bill, his paintings as well as journals from his residencies can be found at
